Water Well System Evaluations & Permitting

Purpose of Supervision
The Environmental Office permits and supervises the construction of newly constructed water supply wells. This is to ensure that wells are in safe locations and constructed to prevent contamination of groundwater.

Ellis County Code requires the inspection of every private water supply when property ownership is transferred within the county’s jurisdiction. This evaluation can also be requested for properties located inside city limits that have private wells.

For state regulations regarding water wells, please view the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Article 30: Water Well Contractor's License: Water Well Construction.

View Ellis County's Construction Guidelines for Water Wells.

Water well permits cost $60. Permit applications should be turned in to the Environmental Office, which is located at:
1515 W. 55th. St.
Hays, KS 67601
